So we got this new Raku Kiln at the art center. Yesterday we did some trial firings with it. We needed to know how the glazes were going to look, how fast the kiln would fire, how much gas it would use per firing, etc.
I haven't done much raku firing in the past, it was kind of fun to do this, and this kiln design will allow a variety of different techniques.
We weren't sure about some of the glazes, partly because they were straight out of books, and because of the number of variables involved in the process, but we got some good results and now have a pretty good idea how to get them or make them better. We were going to fire in the morning, but my boss at the center finally gave me the manual for the kiln and we found out that we had to do an 8 hour preheat at 250 degrees. So we ended up starting at 7 PM. One of the students brought her husband. He was going to work on this book review he had to do for work while she fired. He never got to the book review, the firing process sucked him in.
